Awareness campaign on Tobacco Free Meghalaya by NSS Unit of Mahatma Gandhi University

Meghalaya, the enchanting state nestled in the northeastern region of India, is making remarkable strides towards becoming tobacco-free. Recognizing the detrimental health effects of tobacco consumption and its impact on society, the government of Meghalaya has implemented a series of comprehensive measures to combat this public health issue. With a strong focus on education, legislation, and community engagement, Meghalaya aims to pave the way for a healthier, tobacco-free future.

In recent years, Meghalaya has witnessed a steady decline in tobacco use, thanks to the concerted efforts of both the government and various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working tirelessly to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco. The state’s public health officials and anti-tobacco advocates have been instrumental in implementing effective strategies and campaigns to reduce tobacco consumption among its residents.

To spread the message about the anti-tobacco drive, The NSS Unit of Mahatma Gandhi University carried out an Anti-Tobacco campaign and rally on 20 May 2023 from the University campus to Dehal Bagan School, Byrnihat , on the theme, “Meghalaya: Tobacco Free Meghalaya”, to observe “NO Tobacco Day”. The Program was attended by students of both MGU and Dehal Bagan School, along with the presence of faculties of MGU, Nilesh Sangma (village head), as the Chief Guest, Winterson Marak (headmaster of Dehal Bagan school) and Dr. P. Marak. The Program was coordinated by Diganta Bhuyan, NSS coordinator of MGU.

“Stop Tobacco today and don’t forward this habit to the future generation”, said by the vice-chancellor of MGU Dr. Sagar Manjare.

“Say Yes to Life” said by the Registrar, MGU, Dr. Sarika Dixit.

Further, Mr. Nilesh Sangma said that “Tobacco leads to dangerous diseases like cancer and lung diseases, so the youth and students should not develop the habit of consuming it from their early age”. One of the key components of Meghalaya’s anti-tobacco drive is its emphasis on education and awareness.

The government has collaborated with educational institutions to introduce comprehensive anti-tobacco programs in schools and colleges. These initiatives aim to educate young minds about the risks associated with tobacco use, enabling them to make informed choices and adopt healthier lifestyles. Additionally, public awareness campaigns utilizing various media platforms, such as television, radio, and social media, have played a pivotal role in reaching a wider audience and disseminating anti-tobacco messages.

Legislation has been another crucial aspect of Meghalaya’s tobacco control efforts. The state government has enacted stringent laws and regulations to discourage tobacco use and protect public health.

Measures include banning smoking in public places, prohibiting tobacco advertising, and imposing higher taxes on tobacco products. By implementing these policies, Meghalaya seeks to create an environment that discourages tobacco use while simultaneously supporting those who wish to quit through various cessation programs and services.

Furthermore, the government has actively engaged with community leaders and stakeholders to foster a tobacco-free culture. Collaborative efforts involving local NGOs, healthcare professionals, and community-based organizations have been crucial in spreading awareness and organizing anti-tobacco events.

These initiatives range from organizing awareness drives and workshops to conducting counseling sessions for those seeking assistance in quitting tobacco. The combined efforts of these stakeholders have led to increased community involvement and a greater sense of responsibility in curbing tobacco use.

The strides made by Meghalaya in its battle against tobacco serve as an inspiring example for other states and nations grappling with similar challenges. By prioritizing public health, empowering its citizens through education, and enacting effective legislation, Meghalaya is paving the way for a healthier future, free from the grip of tobacco addiction.

As the state marches forward on its path to a tobacco-free Meghalaya, it is hoped that other regions will draw inspiration from its success and join hands in the global fight against tobacco, creating a world where the health and well-being of every individual takes precedence over harmful habits.
